What is Trevira CS made of?
Every Acunic fabric, from the geometric relief of Cubic Pico to the organic surface of Accentric Crinkle, has the same words in the material line of its datasheet: "100 % Polyester FR, Trevira CS". Those words are easy to read as a fire rating. They name a fibre.
Trevira CS is polyester. Indorama Ventures, which makes it, describes Trevira CS as permanently flame-retardant polyester fibres and yarns, with the flame-retardant property built into the fibre as a comonomer, an organophosphorus compound, rather than applied as a chemical finish. Indorama calls this a modification at the molecular level: the flame retardancy is part of the polyester itself.
Indorama also says Trevira CS textiles are often impossible to tell apart from textiles made of natural fibres.
Indorama Ventures states that its flame-retardant polyester fibres and yarns hold OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, Class 1. Standard 100 is OEKO-TEX's laboratory test for harmful substances, and Class 1, the class for babies' and young children's products, has the strictest requirements and limit values.
Who makes Trevira CS?
Indorama Ventures says it has developed and produced permanently flame-retardant polyester fibres and yarns since 1980. The business was Trevira GmbH until May 2023, when Textile World reported its renaming as an Indorama Ventures company in Germany, with the Trevira CS brand retained.
The name is earned fabric by fabric. Indorama grants the Trevira CS brand to a fabric after a Trademark Agreement and trademark testing of the finished fabric, and the core brand requires fabrics made entirely of Trevira flame-retardant fibres and yarns. A sub-brand, Trevira CS flex, allows up to 25 per cent of special yarns from approved manufacturers. Trevira CS bioactive is a separate, antimicrobial product line; Acunic's datasheets list Trevira CS.
Does the flame retardancy wash out?
No. Indorama Ventures states that the flame-retardant properties "cannot be lost through frequent washing or use", and that wear and ageing do not remove them either. Getzner Textil's sustainability page says that Acunic's Trevira CS yarn has permanent fire protection embedded in the fibre, and that the materials "do not require additional chemical flame retardants".
Whether you can wash a particular fabric is a separate question, answered by its datasheet. The Cubic fabrics are non-washable, and the other Acunic fabrics allow a 40 °C delicates cycle; how to clean architectural fabric covers care by article.
Is Trevira CS fabric non-flammable?
Trevira CS fabric is flame retardant, which is a different property. Indorama describes flame-retardant textiles as able to significantly slow down, or even prevent, the spread of fire.
Each weave earns its own Group Number. Optic Structure, Volumic Weave and Cubic Giga Dyed are each Group 2 in AKA Acoustics' Technical Product Summary (Version A, October 2024).
Does Trevira CS meet the NCC?
The National Construction Code (NCC) rates the lining. For a wall or ceiling lining, NCC 2025 Specification 7 asks for a Group Number from Table S7C4, determined in accordance with AS 5637.1, and clause A5G6(3) deems a product to have that property when it is identical with the tested prototype, or when a laboratory report confirms that it can achieve the property despite minor differences. So the evidence to ask for is the Group Number and a laboratory report on your fabric.
Indorama says it holds generic certificates and test reports, including a German building authority certificate and EN 13501-1 certificates, for use together with a valid Trevira CS trademark approval. Ask which standard and which fabric each one covers: for Australian buildings the NCC names AS 5637.1 for linings, and AS/NZS 1530.3 or AS 1530.2 for the other materials that Table S7C7 regulates, such as a proscenium curtain (AS/NZS 1530.3). How Group Numbers work sets out the lining rules, and whether curtains need to be fire rated covers curtains.
How is Trevira CS used in Acunic?
Getzner Textil AG of Bludenz, Austria, makes every Acunic fabric from Trevira CS, from the voluminous relief of Volumic Bubble to the double-sided texture of Basic. The same fibre gives different fire results in different weaves.
AKA Acoustics' Technical Product Summary rates Cubic Pico, Accentric Crash, Accentric Crinkle, Accentric Soundwave and Optic Braid Group 1, and the other Acunic articles Group 2 (Cubic Giga, Cubic Giga Dyed, Cubic Mega, Optic Diamond, Optic Structure, Volumic Bubble, Volumic Square, Volumic Weave and Basic), all made from Trevira CS; the table below lists each rating.
Australian fire Group Numbers
What the fibre gives every Acunic fabric is flame retardancy that, Indorama says, does not wash out. The rating of the fabric you specify, in its colour and construction, comes from its own test report. Cubic Pico, for example, is Group 1 in the Technical Product Summary, while Optic Structure, woven from the same fibre for Getzner's curtains, is Group 2. Getzner's datasheets also state that technical specifications may differ for dyed fabric, so ask AKA Acoustics about the evidence for your colour. The Technical Product Summary is a free download.
What does the Trevira CS fire video show?
The fire video on this site is a comparative burning test by Trevira CS, filmed at a Trevira CS Club event in Bobingen and published by the Trevira CS channel on 10 October 2019. As its title says, it compares a Trevira CS fabric with a fabric that is not flame retardant. It shows the Trevira CS fibre in general, and the Australian fire evidence for each Acunic fabric is its Group Number.
